Friday I had to bend the knee before the English bureaucracy and for a VISA. No wonder so many South Afrikansers is willing porto deutsche post to green their South African passports in exchange for a red purple European passport - the key to a travelers paradise free from most visa requirements.
About three years ago, the British authorities decided that South Africans now have to apply for a visa if they want to visit England (even if you only stayed an hour or two at one of the airports en route to your destination).
The reason is apparently that the South African Department of Home Affairs is not enough precautions on the issue of South African passports and that there is too much fake South African passports in the round is. For us, however, it feels more like an exploitation of our history and the high numbers of South Africans who visit England every year (which means there is a great financial benefit to the government's coffers).
The ultimate frustration is that the British Embassy in Amsterdam today no longer accept visa applications. You can only apply for a visa for England at an agency in Dusseldorf, Germany.
That means instead of go to work you almost four hours train ride to Dusseldorf for an hour appointment where your passport and the necessary documents to submit your fingerprints taken and a further EUR 34 postage paid only then all the way back home to pack.
Combine the above with treinvertragings, persistent rain and hunger during the train and you get a concoction ready to explode. When I think back to yesterday's wasted hours just for a stamp in my passport I get back just red hot.

Now do not let me start simmering on the cheese heads;) Yep - that's pretty much a tammeletjie for cheaper flights via London but considering the cost of the visa also considers porto deutsche post the fact you can just as well the more expensive tickets buy you a lot of annoyance savings !
